I watched 'Boston Legal' on TV. One of the topic was about Credit Card debt.
ボストンリーガルを見た。今回のトピックの１つは、クレジットカードだった。

Sometimes, I was very surprised when I watch this drama. Last time was about BSE and meat industry. We know, there are 'appearance', 'reality' and 'hidden truth'.
このドラマを見ると時々すごく驚くことがある。前回は、BSEと食肉業界だった。物事には本音と建前、あと、隠された真実、というものがあると思う。

In my opinion, Japanese Dramas or News shows don't always show the hidden truth or reality.(Especially when something related to TV program sponsors) But it seems US TV drama Boston Legal do reveal the real opinions.
日本のドラマやニュースショーは、あまり本音や隠された真実を見せないと私は、思う。(特に、番組のスポンサーが絡むと、スポンサーに配慮すると思う) しかし、米国ドラマのボストンリーガルは、本音を見せてしまうように見える。

One day, I've got a letter from credit card company. It says, "Revolving repayment is very convenient! Why don't you change your default payment settings to revolving repayment? You must be shy to say it when you use our card. 'Pay off in full' seems as if you are manly, but you have to pay lots of money at once. Revolving repayment is way better!" (I already threw it away. This text might be inaccurate.)
ある日、私のところにクレジットカード会社から葉書が来た。「リボ払いはすごく便利です！ ぜひ、自動的にリボ払いになるように初期設定を変えませんか？ シャイなあなたは、カードを使うときにリボ払いにして欲しいと言えないのではないですか？ '一括払いで'と言うのは一見男らしいかもしれませんが、いっぺんにお金を払うのは大変なものです。リボ払いの方がずっといいですよ！」(※もう捨ててしまったので文面は違いがあるかもしれないです)

Of course it's way better for the credit card company. Because they can get more interest every month!
Then, I watched the episode about Credit Card debt in Boston Legal. That TV drama explained lot for me, how are the Credit Card companies think in reality.
そりゃあ勿論、その方がカード会社にとっては良いに決まってる。毎月毎月、利息がガッポガッポと入るんだから！
そしてその後、ボストンリーガルで、クレジットカードの負債の話を見たのだ。このドラマは、カード会社の本音について、いろいろと詳しく教えてくれた。

Customers who pay off their debt are no good. Preferred customers are another ones. The ones who can't pay off. They just pay interest for long time. That's a good, profitable customer for them.
きちんと毎月支払いを済ませる客は、彼らにとってだめな客なのだ。いいお客は別にいる。ちゃんと払えない客だ。負債を貯めた客は、利息だけを長期間に渡って払ってくれる。その客こそが、良い、お金になる客なのだ。

It makes a lot of sense. Someone in a debt hell is just continue paying interest to credit card company for ever. Always 'Pay off in full' customer like me, must be hopeless user for them.
考えてみればすごく納得できる。借金地獄に苦しむ人は、利息だけをずっとずっと、カード会社に払い続けてくれる。いつも一括払いしかしない客は、話にならないような客なのだろう。

I didn't know much about Credit Card company.
From that point of view, Boston Legal is a great drama which shows some reality.
私は、カード会社のことはよく知らなかった。
こういった視点で言えば、ボストンリーガルは、隠された本音や真実を見せてくれるすごいドラマだと思う。

And it's kind of fair enough that we can listen to each sides of opinion in each episodes.
そして、毎回のエピソードで、双方の意見が聞けるのも公平な感じ。

Every Bank or credit card company lend money. It's their business. In a manner of speaking, they help people who need lot's of money temporarily. But of course they are happy if they can get much money(interest) in a legal way.
銀行もカード会社もお金を貸す。それが彼らの商売だ。一時的にたくさんのお金が必要な人を助けているのも確かなのかもしれない。でも、合法的に、もっといっぱいのお金(利子)がもらえるのならその方がうれしいのも間違いないだろう。

English is not fast. It's pretty easy to understand.
英語は速くない。かなり理解しやすいと思う。

It's an Anime which is similar to 'FROM NORTH COUNTRY'(1981) + 'The Thing' (1982 / A remake of the 1951 The Thing from Another World).
北の国から + 遊星からの物体X を目指したアニメなのだという。(遊星からの物体Xは、遊星よりの物体Xをリメイクした、恐怖SF映画。)

At least that's what the director said. (But it may be a kind of joke.)
少なくとも監督はそのように述べている。(冗談なのかもしれないが。)

'FROM NORTH COUNTRY' is a famous Japanese drama. It's very heartwarming and fuzzy. (I've never seen it.)
北の国からは、有名な日本のTVドラマで、心温まる話らしい。(私は見たことがない)

And 'The Thing' is a US sci-fi chiller movie.
そして遊星からの物体Xは、米国製の恐怖SF映画だ。

US viewer also says, "This is an anime as if Buffy(Buffy the Vampire Slayer) met the ULTRAMAN when she was an elementary school kid."
アメリカのファンは、"このアニメは、バンパイアスレイヤーのバフィーが小学生の時に、もしもウルトラマンと出会ったら、って話だ。"とも言っている。

This is a good explanation of this anime, too. 2 girls(Tsubasa & Hikaru) fuse together and become a different being. And she is a kind of female ULTRAMAN.(However, she is a human size super hero.)
これもいい説明だと思う。2人の少女(つばさとヒカル)は、融合して別の存在になる。で、変身後はウルトラマン(女性)みたいな感じなのだ。(但し、巨大化しない、人間サイズのヒーロー)

This is an Anime with 60 min x 13 episodes (not ordinary 30 min type).
And, this anime has 2 different scenes. (Daily scenes and Action scenes.)
このアニメは、60分枠 x 13話で構成されている。(普通の30分枠ではない) そして、２つの違ったシーンで構成されている。(日常描写のシーンと、戦闘シーン)

Daily scenes are just very great. This is the sales point of this drama. You can sit back and just enjoy watching it with relaxed feelings, happily. This is a coming-of-age tale about shy girl, Tsubasa. You will be moved.
日常描写は、なんというかすごい出来。このドラマのセールスポイントは、これだろう。ゆったりと寛いで、楽しんで、リラックスしつつ見られる。内気な少女、つばさの成長物語だ。見れば、わりと感動すると思う。

Action scenes are not bad, ... well... but apparently, not the best.
アクションシーンは、がんばっているし、けっして悪くはないんだけれど、...うーん... ただ、他のと比べても最高にすごいといったレベルではないと思う。

The Creature from 'The Thing' was very very scary. But in this anime, creatures which are apparently designed from black thingy - the roaches, are not scary. They are rather 'cute'.
遊星からの物体Xに出てくるクリーチャーは、おっそろしく怖い奴だった。しかし、このアニメに出てくる連中 ー 黒い、例のカサカサ動く虫からデザインしたと思われるようなクリーチャー達は、怖くない。 どっちかというと逆に、かわいいと思う。

By the way, you might feel English of 2 'Space Detectives' are rather difficult. Instead of bunch of elementary kids, they speak fast about sci-fi things.
ちなみに、2人の'宇宙刑事'達の話す英語は難しいと感じる人もいるかもしれない。他の、小学生の子供らと違って、速く話すのだ。しかもSFで、技術的な、話をする。

But their conversations are always like this.
しかし、彼らの会話はいつもこんな感じだ。

Movie of the Ninja battle! This movie also doesn't have much line, like Fist of the North Star.
忍者バトルアニメの映画版! アクションものなので北斗の拳同様に、あまり会話はありません。

So, it's not a very cost effective movie for all English learners. This is for Ninja Scroll fun, who would like to study English with Ninja Scroll DVD. If you don't like action Anime, you'd better watch other one.
だから、すべての英語学習者にとって、お買い得って感じのDVDではないです。こういうののファンで、どうしても獣兵衛忍風帖やアクション映画のDVDで、英語も習いたい人向けです。アクションなアニメが好きではないなら、別のものを見たほうがいいと思います。

If you are a fun of Hollywood type action movie, I'm sure you'll love this Anime.
しかし、あなたがハリウッド風なアクション映画のファンなら、このアニメがすごく気に入ると思います。

This Anime has very powerful, magnificent action scenes. Characters easily die. But we don't feel much emotions like sorrow feelings.
このアニメは、非常に力強い、飛びぬけたアクションシーンの連続です。人は、ばたばた死んでしまいますが。そして、人が死んでも悲しみや痛みを感じない作風です。

The scenario of Ninja Scroll is exactly like US action movies. Action! - Fight! - Action! - Fight! It never ends. They say this is one of the very famous Anime in US.
獣兵衛忍風帖のシナリオは、アメリカのアクション映画そのものという感じです。アクション! 勝負! アクション! 勝負! これが、ずっと続きます。米国で非常に人気があるというのは、うなずけると思います。

I think you can't criticize any action scenes in this Anime. They're just great.
実際、アクションシーンには、文句の付け所がないと思います。すごいです。

English isn't too difficult. And 26 episodes + movie version with this price is very cost effective.(So, I bought it.) But you'd better think carefully before you buy this DVD series.
英語は、そんなに難しくない。26話 + 映画版でこの価格は、かなりお買い得。(と思って私は、買った。) しかし、買う前によく検討したほうがいいかもしれない。

You'll see lots of giant bugs. They are like big beetles, so you may not feel sick. But the story is scary. Especially episode 1 to 6 is very scary. I felt pain in my stomach.
このアニメには、でかい虫がいっぱい出てくる。甲虫タイプなので、気持ち悪くはない。しかし、話は怖い。特に、最初の6話あたりまでが、すごく恐ろしい。私は、恐怖で胃が痛くなった。

"Blue Gender" is a animation similar to US movie "Starship Troopers" which is also soldiers are fighting with giant space bugs. They are very scary like "Alien 2". But "Starship Troopers" is more grade-B taste picture(it's funnier!) than "Blue Gender" and somehow seems to have more sense of security. "Blue Gender" is more serious and I felt much pain.
ブルージェンダーは、米実写SF映画のスターシップトゥルーパーズ(宇宙虫と戦う軍隊勧誘映画風B級怪作映画)に似ていて、でっかい虫がいっぱい襲って来る話だ。これが映画のエイリアン2みたいですごく怖い。スターシップトゥルーパーズはどことなく、バカっぽいB級な雰囲気もあり(んなわけあるかい!って突っ込むところがいろいろある)、その分救われる感じがあった。しかしブルージェンダーはもっと深刻な感じで、見ていると辛く感じるところがある。

If you never seen "Starship Troopers", please image ALIENS' fighting scene of Marines VS many aliens. You can say "Blue Gender" is an anime of Marines VS Aliens for all 26 episodes.
スターシップトゥルーパーズを見たことがないなら、エイリアン2の海兵隊とエイリアンの死闘が、26話分続く話だと思えば、それでもだいたい合っている。

There are many Armored Robots in this anime, but they are not like Giant Robot, or Gundam. They are very fragile. It's more like a Power Loader(from ALIENS) with arms. It sure can defeat 1 big bug, but not stand a chance against 5 big bugs.
いろいろ機動兵器も出てくるが、巨大ロボットとかガンダムみたいな感じのものじゃない。すごく脆いのだ。エイリアン2のパワーローダーに武器が付いたようなものといった方が近い。虫１匹なら倒せるけど、5匹には歯が立たない感じ。

Many friends, who are smiling or be on good terms just now, dies one after another. Many fleeing civilian also dies. But it was compelling story. Film is very well made and stressful tension is so high. I was got involved in the scene and thought, "next time, it might be my turn to be killed by the bug".
避難民も犠牲になるし、直前までほほえんでたり、なかよくやっていた味方の方々が次々と亡くなっちゃう。完成度が高く、あまりの緊迫感に、いつのまにか"次は自分の番なんじゃあ.." と思うぐらい引き込まれちゃうのだった。

First 6 episodes are great, and some other episodes are great, but some episodes are not great for me. Action was great, but its entirety story seems incoherent to me.
序盤の6話はすごい引き付けられるし、その後もところどころすごいんだけど、時々、自分の趣味とあわず、あまり面白くなかった。虫対機動兵器のミリタリーアクションは迫力あった。しかし全体として、一貫していないようなちぐはぐな印象もある。

I don't think splatter horror action movie has to claim "protection of the natural environment".
戦闘アクション/スプラッターホラーな作品で、なおかつ自然保護を訴えなくてもいいと思う。

I think Hollywood movie "Starship Troopers" is better as "grade B movie" because it's more simple. In Starship Troopers, drill sergeant shouts, "Present war condition is bad, as you know. But all of you!, fresh recruits!, you should follow my orders and kill giant space bugs. That's all. Am I clear? Never mind what Space Bug really is. You just have to kill them. And you, Yes, it's you! Stop just watching this propaganda movie, but why don't you join us!? We, space marine force need your help!"
少し似ている世界観のハリウッド映画:スターシップトゥルーパーズみたいにもっと単純で、"戦況は厳しい！ だがお前ら新兵は、鬼軍曹である俺様の命令に従って重火器をぶっ放し、とにかく侵略生物である巨大宇宙虫を倒せ。以上。 宇宙虫ってなんだ？とかの質問は受け付けん。見ている、そこのお前！そうお前だ。この、プロパガンダ映画を見ているだけなんて、つまらんと思わんか。宇宙海兵隊はお前の入隊をまっとるのだぞ。お前の力が必要なんだ! " の方が潔いB級映画だと思う。

In earlier episodes, I could connect emotionally to leading character, who was always in fear. And I like the high-spirited side character who whoop and charge to giant bug monster. But he come and go very quickly. It was a pity.
序盤は、ただただ恐怖に怯えまくっている主人公に感情移入できるし、うおおおって叫び、気合で敵に突っ込んでいくおっちゃん(けっこう好き)も出てくる。(すぐ死んじゃうが)

After earlier episodes, I couldn't connect emotionally to any character. I think they made unique world but we need something to feel that world clearly, and not all of us have that something. I had similar impression as "Garasaki" or "Armored Trooper Votoms". You might like this one, too, if you are a fun of these animes.
中盤以降は、私は、感情移入できる人が誰もいなかった感じだった。 斬新な世界観とか何かを描きつつ、それでもなんとなく視聴者を突き放すような印象がある。見る人を選ぶ感じなのかな。ボトムズやガラサキを見たときと似たような感想。このタイプの話が大好きな人なら、ブルージェンダーも気に入るかもしれない。

Fist of the North Star is very famous Anime/Manga, so I don't explain about storyline.
有名な漫画/アニメなのでストーリー説明は、省略します。

English is not difficult. Or, you'd rather say, "They don't have much lines!"
英語は、難しくないです。というよりか、"せりふがあんまりたくさん入ってない!"です。

Yeah, basically, many action movie or TV drama(including Anime) doesn't have complex lines. They don't debate about politics(like in The West Wing) while they are doing hand-to-hand fight with their trained fists! They don't talk much.
そうです、こういうアクション物の映画やTVドラマ(アニメも)は、往々にして、複雑な台詞が使われていないことがあります。技を極めた、こぶし対こぶしで格闘戦をしている時に、(ザ・ホワイトハウスとかのドラマでやるような)政治論議をしたりはしないです! たいてい、あまり話をしないようです。

Including this drama, you should rather watch it for your fun.(Sometimes you need to watch that kind of drama!) It's not very useful for English study, compared to sitcom or drama with lot of talking in the scenes. But that kind of drama is often more difficult.
これを含めて、このタイプの話は、楽しむために見るような感じだと思います。(そういうのを見たくなることもあるでしょう? 私はあります!) シットコムや会話の多いドラマに比べると、英語学習目的にはそんなにたくさんは役に立たないと思います。しかし、その手のドラマはもっと難しいきらいがあります。

If the drama you are watching now it too difficult and you have to use dictionary every 10 seconds for the word you don't know, it might be better for you to use easier DVDs, for now. And you can challenge difficult one, later. (When you get more skill and can transform into Super Saiyan.)
もしも、今見ているドラマが難しすぎて、10秒おきに辞書で知らない単語を引かなければならないなどという時には、もっと易しいDVDを見た方がいいこともあると思います。少なくとも今のところは。難解だと思ったやつには、後で、またチャレンジすればいいのですから。(修行して、技の錬度が上がって、スーパーサイヤ人に変身できるようになったころにまた戦えばいいと思います)

Japanese Anime DVDs are expensive, compared to US drama series DVDs.
日本のアニメのDVDは値段が高いです。米国ドラマのDVDに比べると。

So, one day I thought, "Why don't I try cost effective US drama? How about situation comedy?"
そこである日、"値段もお手ごろな、米国ドラマを見てみよう。シットコムなんかどうだろうか?" と思いました。

Then I bought this DVD series. "The Bob Newhart Show" The Complete First Season. It cost just $20 for 630 minutes! It may be too difficult for me, but it's just about $20!
そして、このDVD "The Bob Newhart Show" シーズン１を買ってみました。630分入ってて、$20の超特価でした!

I didn't know much about this drama. I just bought and watched it.
よく知らないドラマでした。とにかくただ買って、見てみました。

And I found out, one have to check carefully before buying something.
そして、買う前によくチェックした方がよかったと、後で思いました。

Well, I could understand English in this drama(with using English subtitle). And the drama was amusing, for a while.
まあ、英語は(英語字幕をONにすれば)なんとか理解できました。ドラマも面白かったです。しばらくの間は。

I realized the remote controller of old TV set in this drama was just very huge. And everything looks very old. It was a drama nearly 40 years ago.
古そうなTVの、リモコンがすさまじく巨大でした。すべてが古めかしい感じでした。これは、40年近く前のドラマでした。

It was an interesting but 'mild flavored' drama for me. (I like more exciting drama series!) You can watch it with peace of mind. This drama is different from South Park or Monty Python Drama. You'll never see all messed up scenes like these dramas often have.
面白いことは面白いのですが、なんというか、私にとっては、'マイルドな薄味'って感じのドラマでした。(もっとエキサイティングなドラマの方が好きなので) サウスパークやモンティパイソンのようなドラマとは違いました。そっち系のドラマによくあるような、滅茶苦茶なシーンはないです。

I think The Bob Newhart Show is a kind of good old days drama. Maybe everyone can enjoy 1 or 2 episodes. But only true admirers can enjoy more.
これは、古きよき時代のドラマなんだと思います。たぶん誰でも、1,2話なら楽しめるような。しかし、もっとたくさん見ても楽しめるには、本当のファンではないと難しいのだと思います。

Watching all 24 episodes is a kind of suffering time for me. Eventually, I realized that I don't like this drama very much.
24話全部見るのは、わりと苦痛でした。いつの間にか、あんまり好きじゃないことに気が付くというか。

But you might enjoy it if you like this kind of taste.
しかし、このタイプのテイストが好きな人なら、楽しめると思います

Drama itself is somewhat very heavy.(it's interesting story though.)
このドラマは、なんというか重たい話だと思う。(面白いけれど)

English isn't too difficult. Well, at least in most of scenes. And you can hear Japanese version as well, if you really need for your understanding.
英語は、そんなには難しくない。まあ、ほとんどのシーンでは。なお、どうしてもわからないところは、日本語音声に切り替えて理解することもできる。

From this DVD cover, you might imagine lighthearted easy watching drama.

But if you do, you'd better watch another DVDs. Because the theme of this drama is environmnetal problem! I'm telling the truth. This is an Anime, but you often find real vegetables and bugs(shot with video camera) in this 'Anime'.
しかし、そういう話が見たいならこのDVDは、やめといた方がいいかもしれない。この話のテーマは、環境問題だからだ。ホントです。その証拠に、実写の野菜の葉っぱと青虫(ビデオカメラで撮ったのか)が、このアニメには、頻繁に登場する。アニメなのに実写だ。

This anime is not hard to approach. You can understand each episodes and it's interesting. But it's hard to predict what will happen in next episode. So, you also find this anime, as clear as mud. To understand this anime, you have to watch carefully.
このアニメは、近寄りがたいって感じではない。各エピソードは、わかりやすくて面白い。ただ、次の回はどんな話になるのか、さっぱり予測できないのだ。そういう意味では、訳が分からないアニメでもある。この話を理解するには、じっくり注意深く見続けている必要がある感じだ。

Is this Robot anime? Giant Robot do appears ... just twice. But I never saw him won any battle.
ロボットアニメなのか? 巨大ロボットみたいなのは、確かに出てくる....2回だけだが。しかし、そいつが戦いに勝つのは見たことがないような気がする。

Is this Super Heroine anime like Sailor Moon? ... I don't think so.
セーラームーンみたいなスーパーヒロインものなのか? ... 違うと思う。

This anime is difficult to explain. It's unique and not similar to any other anime or drama.
このアニメは、説明しづらい。毛色が変わっていて、似たようなアニメやドラマがないので、これに近いというような説明ができないのだ。

One thing is for sure. I bet Director Shoji Kawamori, who made Macross and Escaflowne, watched his garden for a long time. Growing veggy, and watched the bugs which eat that veggy with gusto. Then he made this anime with his guts. I'm sure you can feel it, if you watch carefully.
１つだけ確かなことがあると思う。監督の河森正治さんは、マクロスやエスカフローネを作った後で、自分の家の、庭の野菜とかを長いこと眺めていたような気がする。野菜が土から生えて育って、青虫がその野菜をおいしそうに食べているのも、ずっと眺めていたような気がする。そして、河森さんは気合を込めてこの話を作ったような気がする。注意深く見ていると、その気合が感じられるような作品だと思う。

By the way, I love the funny dance and the song of Heroine's boyfriend.
ちなみに、私は、主人公のボーイフレンドが歌う、歌と妙な踊りが好きだ。
'meriken Burger--! 'merican Burger--! (He likes junk foods.)
"メリケンバーガーーー!" "メリケンバーガーーー!" っていう歌。(彼は、ジャンクフードが大好きなのだ)

English is .. well, .. easy to understand but not too easy.
英語は、 ええと、わかりやすいけど、とても簡単というほどにはやさしくはないレベル。

On first glance, this drama seems like an ordinary giant robot anime. Yes! There are good, strong fightings scenes in another world. Young prince who lost his country. And cute high-school girl from the earth. It's adventure. But something is different.
一見すると、普通の巨大ロボットアニメに見える。そう! 異世界での、迫力のあるバトルシーン。国を失った若い王子。地球から来たかわいめの女子高生。冒険の旅。しかし、何かが違う。

In many ordinary giant robot anime for boys, heroine is often just a heroine. But this is a story from high-school girl Hitomi's point of view. So, as a manner of speaking, I'd rather say this is a giant robot anime for girls.
よくある男性向けの巨大ロボットアニメでは、往々にしてヒロインはヒロインでしかないことがある。でもこの話は、その女子高生なヒロイン、ヒトミの視点から見た話になっている。だから、言ってみればこれは、ある意味女性向けの巨大ロボットアニメと言えるのかもしれない。

But I think you can enjoy watching. There is no argument here that this is one of great anime! Story line is good and easy to understand.
でも、誰でも楽しんで見られると思う。これが傑作だということに異を唱える人は、いないと思う。ストーリーラインは、興味深くて、わかりやすい。


As I said, this is not a "Shounen Manga style" drama. So, you can't see evil dark Boss in the last battle.(like in the Fist of the North Star) Instead, you will see unexpected events.
ただ、"少年漫画スタイル"のドラマじゃない。だから、邪悪な暗黒パワーをまとった強敵(北斗の拳みたいな展開はしない)が最終決戦で現れたりはしない。代わりに、意外な展開がいろいろと...。

I write more about South Park. Because I found many people who wanted to search about South Park came to this blog. And most of them are using 'South Park' and 'learn English' as key words.
サウスパークについて、もう少し書きます。サウスパークを検索してこのBLOGに来る人が多いことが判明したからです。ちなみに、"サウスパーク、英語の勉強" で来る人が多いです。


South Park is not like 'Japanese anime'. It looks kind of cost-effective paper cutout animation. (But in fact, they're using CG.) So, each characters including 4 elementary school boys(lead caracters) basically moves up, down, left, and right. That's all.
サウスパークは、日本のアニメとは似ていません。なんというか、お金が掛かってないように見える、一種の、切り絵を手でちょっとずつ動かすような感じのアニメーションです。(ただ、実際はCGで作っているようです) なので、主役の男子小学生4人を含めて、各キャラクターは基本的に、上下左右にしか動かないです。

The pilot episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" looks bit different from CG. And it seems Trey and Matt used three months to create it, with using construction paper and traditional cut-out animation techniques. (They are talking about it in season 3 DVD, when they were interviewed at hot spring bath in snow mountain.)
一番最初のエピソード、'カートマン、お尻から火炎フン射' (英語版のタイトルは、宇宙人がカートマンを拉致、おしりにアナルプローブを移植! って感じ？) は、特に、あまりCGっぽくないです。昔ながらのペーパーアニメーション手法で、トレイとマットが3ヶ月かけて、紙を切り貼りしながら作ったように見えます。(シーズン3のDVDのおまけ映像で、2人が雪山の屋外温泉につかりながら、そんなことをインタビュアーに語っていたと思います)

They can't use action scenes like 'Japanese anime' but they have many conversations. And because of 'not having any complex visual effect', it's easy to understand storylines. So, you might think it's pretty good for learning English.
手法的に、日本のアニメみたいなアクションシーンを描いたりはできないので、会話シーンが主体です。さらに複雑な画面エフェクトなども使えないので、結果的にストーリーはわかりやすく、把握しやすいです。そういうわけで、英語学習にうってつけなドラマ、に見えなくもありません。

But believe it or not, people who are good at English around me says, "South Park is interesting. You should watch it." or "South Park is full of bad words. You shouldn't watch it." But they never say, "Learning English with South Park is a good idea."
ただ、これを信じる信じないは自由ですが、英語関係者に聞くと、"サウスパークは面白いです。ぜひ見ましょう。" もしくは、 "サウスパークは下品な言葉多すぎ。絶対見ちゃだめです。" という意見は言ってくれますが、"サウスパークは英語学習に最適です。いいアイデアです!" という意見は、聞いたことがないです。

South Park definitely is a animation drama which is worth a watch, in my opinion. But learning English with 'South Park'.... Well, I'm sure you can learn lots of bad words. And you can get knowledges about how to make people angry.
サウスパークは、間違いなく、見る価値があるアニメ作品だと、私は思います。ただ、サウスパークで英語を習うってのは、....。まあ確かに、悪態とかひどい言葉使いを、たくさん覚えられると思います。どうやれば、人を怒らせることができるかの知識も得られると思います。

I recommend you also watch other drama series as well. Because you'd better learn good words, too. (You might get into trouble! If you only know bad English words.)
サウスパークで勉強する場合は、これだけでなく、同時に他のドラマも見ることをお勧めします。いい言葉使いも、覚えるべきだからです。(英語の悪態しか、語彙にないとトラブルに巻き込まれるかもです!)

1. Sexual matters セクシャルな表現
South Park include some sexual matters.(*But because of their paper animation method, they are not visually sexual at all.*)
サウスパークは、性的な表現を含みます。(※'ビジュアル的に'ではないです。何しろ、ペーパーアニメですから、そういう意味の性的な表現は無理です。)

For example, let's see the story of 'Chicken Pox' episode. Parents planned 'Chickenpox party' for their children. (Infecting children to develop strong and persistent immunity at a young age)
例として、'水ぼうそう族'のエピソードを紹介します。まず親が、子供達を水疱瘡パーティー'Chickenpox party' に参加させます。(欧米全部?、アメリカでは、子供のうちに水疱瘡にわざと感染させて、免疫をつけてあげるためのパーティーをするらしいです。)

But after knowing the truth, children were angry. As a counter attack, they went to an elderly hooker's house and give her money. Children's wish was to infect 'the pox' to their parents. Then the hooker(who was suffering bad blood) went to their house and used their parents toothbrushes.
しかし後で、感染させられた真実を知った子供達は怒ります。反撃として、子供達は、年取った売春婦のところへ行き、お金を払います。子供達の願いは、親達を梅毒('the pox')に感染させることでした。そして売春婦(梅毒に感染中?)は、子供達の家を一軒一軒回って、親達の歯ブラシを使って歯を磨いたりします。

And then the parent were infected and this episode ended.
そして、親達が感染してこのエピソードは終わります。


2. Moral matters モラルの問題
Oneday, police arrested tourists by misunderstandings. But they soon forgot about the tourists in a prison. When they remembered, they just found 2 skeletonized body in the prison. These kind of things often happen in this show, as a kind of joke.
ある日、警察が観光客達を、些細な誤解から誤認逮捕します。しかし、警察はすぐに、牢屋に閉じ込めた観光客のことを忘れてしまいます。思い出した時には、白骨化した２つの遺体が牢屋にありました。サウスパークではこういったことが、一種の冗談のようにして、頻繁におこります。

In another episode, an elementary girl got her school teacher in her clutches(she thoght the teacher was her rival in love with an elementary boy). Poor teacher was taken by foreign spy agency and got her killed. These kind of things also often happen in this show.
他のエピソードでは、小学生の男の子(スタン)のことを好きな、同じクラスの女の子が、学校の女教師をわなに嵌めます。(スタンを争う恋のライバルだと誤認したため) 哀れ、先生は外国の諜報部に連れ去られ、殺害されてしまいます。サウスパークでは、こういったことも頻繁に起ります。


3. Social matters 時事問題
They sometimes treat US domestic problems like current events, historic events, and so on. This is not bad things, but you can enjoy this show much more, if you know US better. Sometimes, I couldn't understand the jokes related to domestic matters.
サウスパークでは、アメリカの時事問題や、歴史的な問題、なども取り扱われます。これは、別に悪いことではないのですが、USAのことを詳しく知っているかどうかで、楽しめる幅は変わります。私は、有名人ネタや時事問題に絡むと思しきジョークとかがわかりませんでした。


4. Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo ザ・クリスマスうんち Mr.ハンキー
Mr. Hankey is the most horrible character I ever saw in any animation. I can't help screaming with fear whenever I watch his first episode.(He also appears in another episodes of this show.)
ミスターハンキーは、私がいろいろ見たアニメの中で、もっとも恐ろしいと感じた人物です。初登場の回(トイレでの乱舞シーン)を見ると、恐怖で叫びそうになります。(その後も時々登場するゲストキャラです。)

Mr. Hankey himself is a charming caracter. He just dance and sing a song. But he is a Poo who has face, and can talk. He danced in the bathroom with Kyle. Wherever he dances, part of his 'body' remains there. And then, Kyle's parents saw their child was standing in the bathroom alone, holding a 'poo' in his hand.
Mr.ハンキーそのものは、明るい好人物です。彼は歌って踊るのが好きなだけです。ただし彼は、顔を持ち、しゃべれるウンチなのです。彼は、バスルームでカイルと踊りました。彼が踊ると、その移動過程には、ずるずるっと、彼の体の一部が、軌跡として残ります。そしてそこへカイルの両親が現れ、息子がひとり、バスルームに立ち、手には'うんち'を握っている場面を、目撃しました。

Kyle was talking to the 'poo'. And the bathroom's wall was covered with graffiti (by poo). Kyle was holding a 'poo' in his hand, so he must be the 'sick' person who drew the graffiti of poo. (Kyle explained about Mr. Hankey. But parents didn't believe him.) Can you imagine how much shock the parents got!? Kyle ended up taken to a children's mental hospital.
カイルは、何やら'うんち'に話しかけていました。そして、バスルームの壁中に'うんち'で描いたとしか思えない落書きがありました。カイルは手に'うんち'を握ってましたので、どう見ても、息子が精神的におかしくなり、ウンチを手で掴んで壁に落書きしたようにしか見えません。(カイルはMr.ハンキーのことを説明しますが、両親は信じません。)
この時の親のショックを想像できますか!? カイルは、小児精神病院に入院されられてしまいます。

By the way, once I had a trouble with magazine seller. They somehow stopped sending magazines before all 12 issues came. I sent emails, but their support was very sloppy. Months went by. At last, I wrote a email with 'South Park talking style'. One hour later, (even it was midnight) my phone rang.(It was an international call from US.) Someone was shouting in English. He seemed very, very angry.
ちなみに、私は雑誌の海外通販でトラブルにあったことがあります。通販業者は、1年分12冊を送り終わらない途中の月で、雑誌の発送を中断してしまいました。何度メールを送っても、のらりくらりとしたテキトーな対応でした。月日が経ちました。私は最後に、サウスパークでしゃべっているようなスタイルの、罵詈雑言な英文メールを出しました。一時間後に、(深夜でした) 電話が鳴りました。(アメリカからの国際電話でした。) 誰かが、英語で叫んでいました。彼は、すさまじく怒っていました。

Well, in the end, I could get remaining magazine issues.(Magazine's English was too difficult for me though.) 'South Park talking style' might be handy, sometimes. But not for everyday life.
まあ、いろいろあった最後には、残りの雑誌をちゃんと送ってもらうことに成功しました。(なお、雑誌の英語は私には難しすぎて、役には立たなかったです) サウスパークの会話風文体は、時々は便利なのかもしれません。しかし、日常の会話に使うのは問題なこともあると思います。

This is a court drama. English is very fast. And there are many technical jargon related to judicial trial.
裁判ものドラマ。英語は、かなり速い。そして、裁判関係の専門用語がたくさん出てくる。

Boston Legal is a cynical drama, which people may have strong likes or dislikes. It's pretty interesting to me. But maybe not everybody like to watch it.
ボストンリーガルは、シニカルな笑いというか、好みが分かれるような作品だと思うけど、まあまあおもしろいと思う。誰もが好きになる話ではないかもしれないけれど。

I bought season1 DVD 2 years ago, but this drama was too fast for me at first. Then cable TV(FOX) started airing this drama with Japanese caption last year. So, I watched Japanese version and this English version DVD both one by one.
シーズン１のDVDを2年前に買って見てみた時は、自分にはあまりに速すぎと感じた。そしたら、去年FOXが日本語字幕版を放送開始したので、英語のみのDVDとTVの日本語版両方を交互に見られた。

You might check this drama on TV(FOX), before you buy DVD. If English was very fast for you, buying DVD and watch TV and DVD both might be also good idea for you.
このドラマは、TV(FOX)で今も放送中かもしれないので、DVDを買う前にチェック可能かも。英語が早すぎると感じたら、英語字幕付DVDも買ってTVと交互に見たりするのもいい考えかもしれない。

By the way, the last episode of first season was not so interesting to me. I don't like the style of many TV series which "to be continued" to next season. They should be concluded in season's end. It's just cold-hearted!
関係ないけど、第１シーズン終了時の話だけは......って感じだった。あすこまでして、第２シーズンへひっぱらないといけないのか。いつもの調子でやればいいのにと思った。1シーズンのDVDを買っても、必ず"続く"ってことで、完結しないのは不親切だと思う。


最近、びっくりしたこと。ボストンリーガルにカーク船長が出ていた!
I was surprised when I noticed Denny Crane(William Shatner) was "Captain James T. Kirk(USS Enterprise in the TV show Star Trek from 1966". I knew Paul was "Security Chief Odo in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from 1993" because his face is very different from the rest. But I couldn't recognize William Shatner's face. He is getting old. He body shape had changed to stoutly built. And Denny Crane is very "Denny Crane", he is an unique character. In Boston Legal, his role is important supporting player. He was a very good lawyer and he seems to be getting increasingly distracted old man.
法廷もののTVドラマ、ボストンリーガルに スタートレックからDS9のオドー役の人だけでなく、初代のカーク船長(ウイリアムシャトナー)まで出演していた事に気が付いたこと。あまりに太ってて年取ってて、全然わからなかった。"ダニークレイン!"のキャラが濃すぎて、ダニークレイン(劇中の重要な脇役で、少しもうろくしつつある、元敏腕弁護士)としか認識できなかったというか。


そして、FOXで、シーズン２も開始したけれど...。
Ah.... where is the conclusion of season1 last episode!? Why, why don't they have one? Suddenly they made a big climax of the show at last episode and it was end in the middle. "Wait for the conclusion in season2!"
あの... シーズン1の続きはどうしたんですか!? なんで続きがないんだろうか? 最終エピソードで唐突にクライマックスになって、"この続きはシーズン２を待て!"とばかりに切れたのに。

And they don't seem to have conclusion in season2. Maybe because this show is the "Boston Legal."
そして、その話の続きはシーズン２にはないようだ。理由は、たぶん、この番組がボストンリーガルだからなのかなぁ。

Recently, many TV shows end with "Hero is in a pinch! What will happen next? Wait for the conclusion in next season!"(Unless that was a final season.)
This must be an American joke from Boston Legal. I will kick my TV set if there is no conclusion in StarTrek series. But in Boston Legal, don't you think this kind of thing might happen?
最近の米TVドラマは、"ヒーローがピンチ! いったいどうなってしまうんだ? この結論はシーズン２を待て!"(最終シーズンで、本当に終了してしまう場合のみ、例外) というのが多いと思う。だからこれは、ボストンリーガル流のアメリカンジョークなんだろう。スタートレックで、続きがありませんとか言われたらTVを蹴飛ばすかもしれないが、ボストンリーガルだと、こういうこともあるかなぁと変に納得しないですか? 私はします。

I felt last episode of season1 was not very "Boston Legal". Episodes in Season2 are same taste as in season1's. Cynical and funny!
逆にシーズン1の最終話は、あまりボストンリーガルらしくなかったと思う。シーズン２の話は、シーズン1のいつものテイストに戻ってます。シニカルで愉快な感じ!



(おまけ) ボストンリーガル、シーズン1のエピソードの１つ 狂牛病の話 BSE and Boston Legal
This episode was a story about mad cow disease. It seemed to me, there were lot's of explosive statements. If I were a US citizen, I must have been shocked. And I couldn't understand nor agree with the conclusion(court decision) of this story. But it might be a difference of national character thing.
今回、狂牛病がらみの話だった。なんというか、爆弾発言満載に見えた。米国民が、見たら、BSEの不安を持つような内容だと思った。でも国民性の違いで、そうはならないのかもしれない。このへんの文化の違いはよくわからない感じ。

>US citizens are not nancy-pansy(not coward). We shouldn't fear baseless rumor. We shouldn't panic. We shouldn't ban selling beef!
>判決:
>米国民は、骨なしくらげ(意気地なし)ではなく、勇気のある国民だ。根拠の無いパニックに怯えたりしてはいけない。だから牛肉を禁止すべきではない!

I couldn't stop wondering, "Is this really an agreeable conclusion after watching this drama??"(check a following script attached below) This drama might be just a bringing up of debate. But I think they can't make this kind of drama in Japan. Because of meat market protest.
不安材料をさんざん提示した(以下参照)後で、本当にこの結論でOKなのかなぁ。問題提示なのかもしれないけど、日本だとお肉屋さんから抗議がくるから放送できないような内容だと思う。

Beef is dangerous. You might get BSE. They found BSE meat in Canada. If you ate it, it break down your brain. There is no cure. You die painfully.
牛肉はBSEの危険があります。カナダで発見されてます。
万一その肉が出回ったら、治療法がなく、脳をやられて苦しみながら死ぬのです。

Government is a crony of meat industry. They control government with contribution of money. Department of Agriculture have a cozy relationship with meat industry. --> Then attorney gave a lot's of evidences.
In this april, one cow was fallen down in Texas. But it never tested. The cattle was soon slaughtered for animal food. Because if they tested and found out BSE case, it cause a crippling blow to the U.S. economy.
>アメリカ政府は"危険はない"と言ってますが?
政府は業界の回し者です。食肉業界 献金 札束で国の政策を操ってます。
農務省は業界と癒着しています → その証拠を沢山述べる
4月にテキサスで牛が倒れた。検査されずにすぐに豚のえさにされた。もしBSEと判明したら経済に大打撃だからです。

We don't know for sure. Incubation period of this disease is more than 40years. You might have been infected. And there might be many person who are diagnosed as Alzheimer, are in fact, might be infected with BSE meat.
>アメリカでは1人も、BSE患者がでていませんが?
そんなことわかりません。潜伏期間が40年もあるのです。あなたも感染しているかも。
なお、現在でも、BSEなのに、アルツハイマーと誤診されている人がいるかもしれません。

And surprisingly, after we found BSE cases, they do less BSE testes. It decreases. We test less than half of total number of shipment cows, now. We even don't have strict trace system like in EU. We can't search where the BSE cow came from. Who want to declare BSE cow is came from his or her farm?
さらにBSEが確認された後で、なぜか検査数はどんどん減っている、現在は、牛出荷総数の半数にもみたない。さらにBSE牛が見つかった場合でも、どの農場から出荷されたか確認するトレースシステムも無い。

倒れた牛だけが検査対称になっているけど、実はあのBSE牛は、倒れなかった。→ つまり(その見分け方は間違っていて)、見逃されているBSE牛があるかもしれない。
We should check only follen cattle. But in fact, that BSE cattle was standing! So, the current diagnostic procedure might be a mistake. We might have BSE meat in stores.
